Harpers Ferry has long been known for an extensive body of ghost stories and folklore, going back at least to the 1800s. Many of our residents have their own stories of encounters with the supernatural (ask Etel about her own ghost story!), and our town has long been a major destination for “ghost hunters.”
For over 50 years now, Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry has been keeping those stories alive, and is a popular activity for our guests. Started by Shirley Dougherty, a folklorist who compiled the region’s spooky tales in her book A Ghostly Tour of Harpers Ferry, and continued by living historian Rick Garland, Ghost Tours offers a family- and dog-friendly walking tour of our time, conducted by a guide in historic dress who recounts these haunting stories in the various places about town in which the stories are set (including the haunted house in which Rock used to live).
Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, the tour is highly entertaining, and the stories offer an authentic window into our past that you won’t get from the museums! Tours start promptly at 8 pm from the piazza of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and last 1 and ¾ to 2 hours. For reservations (particularly recommended in October and in the off-season), call 304-725-8019 or 732-801-0381 or emai RickGMail@comcast.net.
